Even if you make a conscious effort to eat wholesome food, are you missing out on nutrients that are essential to health? A new paper from the University of Washington raises that concern by suggesting that existing recommended intakes of vitamin C, important for healthy skin and cartilage as well as immune function, are too low and should be doubled.
In the UK it’s recommended that adults consume a minimum of 40mg a day of vitamin C from sources such as fruit and vegetables. The World Health Organisation (WHO) suggests a minimum daily intake of 45mg, but Philippe Hujoel, a professor of oral health sciences who led the Washington study, concluded that an average daily vitamin C intake of 95mg is required to avoid deficiency
